John,

I know it's been a while since you asked and you might have figured this out already. In case you havent... Load the vmWare files into your datastore using the VMware Infrastructure Client, then right-click on the .vmx file in the datastore and select 'Add to inventory'.

On ESX4, when you try to attach a network label to the vNIC, it says you don't have permission. Maybe something to look at, I fixed it by removing and re-adding the vNIC and applying the .vmx fix above.

Is there a trick to importing the appliance? When I try to import the appliance I can't find a file that the infrastructure client likes.

Thanks for the info in the post, and to concombre_masque for the info about how to change it without reinstalling. We're performing some rsync across a wan using freenas on esx3.5, and were getting some weird networking errors. Made the change, and so far it's looking good!

thanks a lot!
got an ESXi 3.5 here connected to a cisco Gigabit switch but I only get about 12meg/s out of my virtualized FreeNAS. I also have a ubuntu server vm with vmware tools using vmnet and jumbo frames which gets up to 65meg/s.

Funny, I've been playing with the same thing on VMWare Server 2.0 and blogged about it recently. My experience is that FreeNas and FreeBSD 7.0 both have HORRIBLE performance in VMWare.

Oh, and as for the VMWare tools, there is no BSD vmnet driver in them.

Check out my blog, I posted some unscientific benchmarks for copying a 650MB ISO file between my Windows PC and FreeNAS and FreeBSD 7.0, and Linux the results are awful for BSD.

To use the E1000 nic, just edit the .vmx file and add :

ethernetx.virtualDev = "e1000"

where x stands for the number of the nic you want to use.
